Shades of midnight

These are the shades of midnight,
Your poison ivy,
Curling through my veins,
I longed for the touch of a lover,
But am beset,
By your toxic words instead,
As you sew my bridal train,
Hemlock and belladonna,
For one as beautiful as me,
Or so you say,
I see them in your hands,
The cold metal of your caging chains,
But while I’m drowning in the poison,
You take the withered flowers from me
Replace them with the chalice of blood,
Unwilling exchange,
I struggle against these bonds,
To make you understand,
To make you see,
But you only smile at me,
Tip the cup to my face,
Red smiles,
Red gown,
My neck is a messy disgrace,
The dagger flashes instead of your face.
